April 2009
After an appeal to GTS & GETS volunteers
and members the charity was in a position to start its Breakfast Feeding
Program for the 60 children who attend the Nursery each day. This could
not have been achieved without each and
every generous sponsor who agreed with us that children are more
alert and more able to use and develop their brains if they start the day
with food in their tummies. The children say, "Thank You" and we
at the charity thank you. Click on the link below for a full report with
many more pictures of the initial half term's experience.

How it all started -
December 2008
A feeding
programme was started this term at
St
Peter’s, the school which we administer for a Cheshire Church group.
The
scheme was introduced with a dual purpose. The first reason was to give the
children a small snack when they arrive at school - for many of them leave home with no
breakfast
at all, which often means that the small nursery
children are asleep by mid morning and certainly are unable to
concentrate. The second reason was to ensure that the children are not
late for school - serving breakfast before school starts has made a dramatic improvement
in children getting to school on time!

The
snack is a sweet porridge, made from pounded Casava (Garry) mixed with
water and condensed milk, served 3 times a week,
with Tapalapa (a local bread stick) served with a bean sauce on the other two days.
This is not a sumptuous meal but it is something and it has made
such a difference to the children's concentration, alertness and
willingness during their morning sessions. The
food costs approximately £10 per child per
year. There
are additional costs, as bowls and
spoons are needed and we also need to
pay the cleaner a small extra amount per month to prepare the food and
wash up the equipment each day.

It
has proved to make such a difference that we are asking if it is possible
to raise the funds to to implement a similar programme at Bakoteh Nursery
from January 2009.
Our Head at Bakoteh, Nfamara Jarju, is most
concerned that at present that although many children do bring in 1D a day to buy something at
break, the only things available
are biscuits, sweets and bubble gum. These are not
actually nourishing the children but probably really rotting their teeth.
He will ask the parents instead to contribute this 5D a week
towards the feeding, this will initially cover the cos and pay the additional wages for the cleaner.

We
have a MASSIVE priority to increase our teachers' salaries so cannot
finance this programme from our funds.
Please
can we make a plea for sponsors to cover the cost
of the food?
The cost of the food is 12D a week per child - the UK equivalent is 31p -
so this represents a cost
of around £12 for the year.
We
need a minimum of 40 sponsors at £10 a year (this includes the gift aid that we would
receive from the money) to cover the cost
of food for the children of Bakoteh school.
