GETS (Gambian Education and Teaching Support) was established in 2004 as the UK branch of the highly respected and firmly established Gambian GTS (Gambia Tourist Support.) Both are registered charities.

The creation of GETS was to facilitate the educational projects originally initiated and supported by GTS to become separately managed and financed. GETSuk trustees help to ensure stability and assist the further development of educational opportunities.

To ensure this separation of roles. GETS started with previously employed GTS staff- none of these staff are still working with the GETS charity.

The clarification of the roles of both charities is now much clearer and the administration after a number of years is no longer controlled by Gambians, who are being replaced by UK volunteers paid Gambian rate salaries.

The ways of working before our charity registration had to be overhauled  and the existing staff found it difficult to adjust to the new financial rigors and filing needs of the expanding charity.

After a number of fraught years trying to provide effective feedback to sponsors and donors, the charity has finally accepted that the administration MUST be done by Europeans, but will continue to be supported by Gambian staff.

Staff are: -

Francis Glynn - GETSuk Chairman, who now lives permanently in the Gambia with his Gambian wife.

India Glynn - having completed a Psychology degree at Manchester University
has volunteered to work on GETS administration as well as teacher training for a number of months into 2008.

We are expecting to have the services of a very experienced administrator,
who worked under the 'Age Concern' umbrella for over 20 years,
to work with us from early 2008.

Basirou

Basirou Ceesay - Bas was one of out GETS sponsored older students, from when Bas started being sponsored he always came into the office to help, however, in late 2007 Bas started as a paid assistant administrator, helping with filing and general inquiries in the charity office.

GETS has moved to running its Gambian office with UK voluntary staff, this is a U-Turn in policy & has taken 10 years to accept as it totally goes against the basic principles around which the charity was established.

The charity will continually review this decision and at such time as a Gambian member of staff can be found who is able to fulfill the necessary duties of auditable management, I am sure the trustees will be delighted to reconsider.

GETS is determined to make a significant difference to the education of Gambian children and young adults.

We are now encouraging UK volunteers to support the charity, ready to take on the challenge of the massive task of building a 15 classroom school with support buildings, that will take Gambian children through from Nursery to University.

Many members, donors and volunteers become involved as a result of visiting the Gambia, finding the GTS restaurant/bar and want to help. Others come via either the linked GTS or GETSuk websites or by word of mouth.

Membership applications for either or both linked charities
are warmly welcomed and appreciated.
