Her father, Hasana Barry, a wood
seller, became ill and died in hospital in January 2008. Her mother
is now trying to support the family by selling wood.
Mariamma is a pleasant girl with good English.
She lives in Manjai with her mother
and younger brother Omar, whose education is being sponsored.
Mariamma was in Grade 10 at Gambia
High School, but had to leave school after her father died because her mother
could not afford
to send her there.
She is now sponsored by Emma Bowes
and Neela Jarvis so she has been able to return to school.
